Starting Your Car In The Winter With an Ignition Interlock Device

February 1, 2019 by QuickStart Ignition Interlock

There are roughly 150,000 interlock systems now in vehicles in the United States. These car breathalyzer devices are placed inside vehicles for drivers with multiple driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol (DUI) convictions. For drivers with a serious drug or alcohol problem, these devices aren’t in place just for punishment purposes, but for safety reasons, as well.

Unfortunately, during these frightful winter months, where temperatures can reach as low as 10 to 20 degrees below zero, drivers who use car breathalyzer devices and other ignition interlocks are experiencing problems getting their cars started.

Luckily, there are a few ways to start a vehicle with an ignition interlock device. Here are some great tips for starting a vehicle with an ignition interlock system in freezing cold weather:

If you want to learn more about how to start a vehicle with an ignition interlock device during the cold winter months or purchase quality car breathalyzer devices, give QuickStart Ignition InterLock a call right away — and drive safe!

  1. Inspect your battery and alternator

If your vehicle’s battery isn’t working properly or too old, you’re going to have all sorts of car trouble — especially if you have an ignition interlock device. If your battery is over four years old, get it checked out by a professional right away.

  2. Keep the device inside

If your state allows you to physically disconnect your interlock device, keep your device inside your home throughout the brutally cold winter nights. This will ensure that the device is warm and ready to go whenever you’re ready to drive. If you can’t detach your device, simply hang it upside down on your steering wheel. This will keep the frozen moisture at the top of the device, away from the circuitry, allowing you to easily start your vehicle.

  3. Drive your car often

No matter how cold it gets in your town if you regularly drive your vehicle it will likely be warm enough to start. Neglecting to drive for three or four days in a row will lead to plenty of car trouble.
