Here’s What You Need to Look for in a Quality Ignition Interlock Device for Your Vehicle

You are here: Home / General Information / Here’s What You Need to Look for in a Quality Ignition Interlock Device for Your Vehicle
January 5, 2016 by Chris Grinnell

While you may feel as if your driving freedom is being violated with an ignition interlock device, it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. The truth is, another 28 people die as a result of drunk driving every day in the U.S., and your interlock device is simply a way to ensure that you do not add to the problem.

Additionally, there are now quality ignition interlock devices that are much more discreet and easy to use than in the past. Once they’re installed, interlocks are associated with about a 70% reduction in arrest rates for impaired driving, and this added safety net will allow you to drive with confidence if you find the right device. Here are some of the most important things to look for in a quality ignition interlock device:

  • Discreet breathalyzer
The embarrassment of blowing into a car breathalyzer in front of friends or coworkers is something that everybody wants to avoid. These days, the best interlock devices are almost impossible to distinguish by anyone who does not know you have one in your car. In fact, there are even devices that look and feel exactly like water bottles, so all you have to do is “take a quick sip of water” before starting the car.
  • Remote lockout override
Another common complaint of those who do not have high-quality interlock devices is that they get stranded on the side of the road for no reason. Whether it be due to a device malfunction or false positives, you cannot afford to be stranded at no fault of your own. High-quality device manufacturers will offer remote lock override to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you.
  • Works in any weather
To stay with the theme of not getting stranded in your car, you need a device that works in both hot and cold temperatures. Some low-quality ignition interlock devices will become faulty in extreme weather, and many people are forced to physically carry them so they will work upon returning to the car. Find an interlock device that can withstand extreme temperatures and allow you to keep it inside your car.

There are already more than 150,000 interlock systems in cars across the U.S., placed there for drivers with multiple DUI convictions. Not all ignition interlock devices are made equal, and by finding one that is discreet and reliable, it will feel as if you never even had one installed.
